When I set up this blog it asked for a description. It's the bit up at the top left that I eventually labelled "A blog with random musings".

Today I started wondering what musings were. I had a feeling that musings were something that came from "the Muses" - whatever or whoever they might be.

After pondering this for a little while, I decided I needed to find out about muses. Here's what I found.

Wikipedia tells me that the Muses are nine goddesses, the daughters of Zeus, king of the gods, and Mnemosyne, goddess of memory.

They are:

  • Calliope (Chief of the muses and muse of epic song)
  • Euterpe (muse of lyric song)
  • Clio (muse of history)
  • Erato (muse of erotic poetry)
  • Melpomene (muse of tragedy)
  • Polyhymnia (muse of sacred song)
  • Terpsichore (muse of dance)
  • Thalia (muse of comedy and bucolic poetry)
  • Urania (muse of astronomy)

If my blog consists of musings, presumably I ought to be able to associate each blog entry with a relevant Muse.

This entry would be related to Clio, since I'm looking at the history of Muses.

My first entry (Welcome to my blog) must be related to Calliope, since it's the first of many entries (an epic number).

And the second blog (on Dual-Drawer Dishwashers) would have to be related to Euterpe - since the flooding of our old dishwasher had a lyric or flowing quality. Or is that stretching Muses beyond reasonable bounds?
